Online Fashion Systems,

2025/2026 Syllabus

The Online Fashion Systems module explores how fashion operates within digital cultures, networks, and infrastructures. Framing aesthetic strategy as a critical and creative method, the course investigates how online systems shape meaning, identity, and value — and how practitioners can engage with, subvert, or reimagine these frameworks.

Through a mix of theory, practice, and experimentation, participants will engage with digital platforms, images, and interfaces as cultural materials. The module emphasizes digital agency and literacy, encouraging participants to see the internet not only as a medium but as a dynamic structure for connection, communication, and creation.

SUBVERSIVE FORMS & AESTHETIC STRATEGIES

6/11/2025
11:00 - 15:00
This session delves into the mechanics of aesthetic strategy, unpacking how visual and conceptual gestures operate as tools for critique, subversion, and cultural commentary. Through case studies and examples from digital fashion and artistic practice, participants will explore how aesthetics are deployed to provoke, engage, or reframe audience perception. The session emphasizes relationality — understanding interfaces and online environments not as neutral spaces but as active participants in shaping experience. Participants will examine both mainstream and alternative approaches, identifying subversive, non-capitalist, and experimental modes of digital practice.

key ideas

  • Understanding aesthetic strategies as infrastructural and relational acts.
  • Non-capitalist and subversive modes of digital materiality.
  • The interface as an active, relational object.
  • Artistic practices that intervene in or reframe digital fashion narratives.

please prepare    Select one alternative digital, concept, artist or space (e.g., Terminal Green, Alex Quicho, Monoskop), that is mentioned in the additional reading, and analyze the aesthetic strategy: composition, interactivity, ambiguity, or glitch. Share your observations with the group in class and propose one way the aesthetic could subvert traditional norms of engagement.
